Attention: not all pelvic effusion should be treated

Pelvic fluid can be divided into two categories: physiological and pathological pelvic effusion. If it is the latter one, timely and proper treatment is necessary. However, if it is the former one, treatment is needless.

Pelvic cavity is the lowest part of abdominal cavity. When there are secretions or leaking fluid in abdominal cavity, they are likely to flow to pelvic cavity, easily developing pelvic fluid. Under normal circumstances, women have a small amount of blood accumulating in the pelvic cavity during ovulation and menstruation. In general, the fluid capacity is within 1 cm. It can be absorbed by the body itself. Therefore, there is no need to be too worried, and excessive treatment is not necessary.

When it is unclear whether it is physiologic or pathological pelvic fluid, B ultrasound can be an effective inspection method to determine the amount of effusion. In addition, more detailed diagnosis can be reached through the clinical symptoms, history of diseases and so on. Generally speaking, if the amount of fluid is more than 1 cm, it is defined as pathological pelvic fluid.

Pathological pelvic fluid is mainly caused by diseases like pelvic inflammatory disease, annexitis and endometriosis. In addition, having sex soon after menstruation or delivery, infection of gynecological operations and neglect of personal hygiene can also be reasons of pathological pelvic fluid.

Once suffering pathological pelvic fluid, patients can experience abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, even infertility, bringing a lot of distress to females. Therefore, appropriate treatment should be taken as soon as possible.

In clinic, there are many treatment options for pathological pelvic fluid.

Physical therapy:
Physical therapy promotes local blood circulation by mild and benign stimulation, improving metabolism. And this helps the body absorb and eliminate inflammation, achieving the therapeutic purposes.

Drug therapy:
1. Western medicine
Have intramuscular injection of alpha chymotrypsin every other day, 5 to 10 times every treatment course. Patients can also combine antibiotic therapy with dexamethasone (0.75 mg each time and 3 times every day).

2. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
Adopt antiseptic and antiphlogistic drugs such as fuyan pill to eliminate inflammation.

Surgical treatment:
In addition to pelvic fluid, if patients also have lumps or cysts, then surgical treatment can be used.

At last, Dr. Lee reminds patients that, each treatment method has its inherent advantages and disadvantages. For example, TCM like fuyan pill is more suitable for patients with fertility requirements, but it takes a relatively longer treatment course; surgery works faster but it cannot radically cure the disease and brings damage. Therefore, patients should choose the most appropriate treatment according to their own health conditions.
